How weekly meal subscriptions work

A subscription is a standing weekly order. The customer picks their meals once, ticks the weekly box, and the order renews every week until they change it. Behind that simple box, your software has to handle six things.

Where subscriptions break down

Most problems with weekly subscriptions aren't about the checkbox. They're about what happens around it.

• Renewals live in a different report than orders, so you add them up by hand before you shop.
• Customers can't skip on their own, so they text you, or they just cancel.
• Subscriptions sit on a pricier tier, so the feature that brings steady money costs the most.
• Reminder texts are expensive or missing, so you stop sending them.

What each platform offers

Prepwork

Weekly subscriptions are on the same $9 plan as everything else, with unlimited meals, orders and customers. Customers skip, pause or cancel from their own account. Prep totals include renewals, and shopping lists are built from your recipes with converted units and estimated cost, so you see your weekly margin before you shop. Reminder texts are 2¢ a segment from a local number customers can reply to.

Bottle

The runner up overall, built around text to order, campaigns and reminders. Subscriptions and meal plans start on the $99 Growth plan, which includes 500 texts. The free Starter plan doesn't include them.

GoPrep

Lists subscriptions, plus a nutrition facts generator, label printing and inventory. Plans are $95 a month up to 100 orders, then $249. Texting is a $15 a month add on plus 8¢ a text. See GoPrep pricing explained.

MealTrack

Subscriptions start on the Growth plan. Plans run $199 to $599 a month billed monthly, or $149 to $375 billed yearly. Texting is only on the top Scale plan, and the price isn't published.

Sprwt and Shopify

We couldn't find weekly subscriptions on Sprwt's site. On Shopify, subscriptions are a separate app on top of the $39 Basic plan and a pickup and delivery app.

Switching platforms when you have subscribers

This is the one honest catch with any switch. Subscriptions can't move from one platform to another automatically. Menus and customers move easily, and saved Stripe cards can transfer, but each subscriber re-ticks the weekly box once on the new store.

A few things make it painless:

• Switch at the start of a week, right after a cutoff, so nobody misses a delivery.
• Send one bulk text with a link to the new store and a plain "tick the weekly box again" ask.
• Keep your number if you can. On Prepwork, a texting number you control moves over in 2 to 4 weeks, or you can get a new local number in days.

How to keep subscribers longer

No magic numbers here, just the habits that give people fewer reasons to leave. Each one uses a tool already built into Prepwork.

1. Make skip easier than cancel. Someone going on vacation doesn't want to quit. When they can skip or pause from their account, they have an option besides cancelling.
2. Remind before cutoff. A short bulk text the day before cutoff gives subscribers time to skip or pause before it locks. At 2¢ a segment, a one segment reminder to 100 subscribers is about $2.
3. Switch on win back texts. When a regular stops ordering, a friendly text brings them back without you tracking who went quiet.
4. Catch half finished orders. Cart texts reach people who started an order and didn't check out.
5. Send a birthday text. Pair it with a coupon or store credit.

8. Make reordering one tap. For customers who aren't on a subscription yet, "Order again" reorders in one tap.
9. Watch your repeat customers. Reports on repeat customers show who's sticking and who's drifting.
